Group Sues Akpabio, Abass Over ‘Plan To spend N110bn On Bulletproof Cars, Others’

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a lawsuit against the Senate President, Mr Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of House of Representatives, Mr Tajudeen Abbas over “the unlawful plan to spend N40bn on 465 exotic and bulletproof cars for members and principal officials, and N70bn as ‘palliatives’ for new members.”

The suit is coming on the heels of the statement by Mr Akpabio that the Clerk of the National Assembly had sent “holiday allowances” into the “various bank accounts of senators”. Some 137 million Nigerians face extreme poverty.

In the suit number FHC/L/CS/1606/2023 filed last Friday at the Federal High Court in Lagos, SERAP is seeking: “an order of mandamus to direct and compel Mr Akpabio and Mr Abbas to review and reduce the N40 billion budgeted to buy 465 Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) and bulletproof cars for members and principal officials.”

SERAP is also seeking: “an order of mandamus to direct and compel Mr Akpabio and Mr Abbas to repeal the Supplementary Appropriation Act 2022 to reduce the budget for the National Assembly by N110bn to reflect the current economic realities in the country.”

In the suit, SERAP is arguing that: “Nigerians have a right to honest and faithful performance by their public officials including lawmakers, as public officials owe a fiduciary duty to the general citizenry.”

Petrol Price May Jump To ₦‎750 Per Liter

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) has indicated that the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) may rise to about N750 per liter

The association’s national spokesperson, Chinedu Ukadike conveyed this while speaking in Abuja.

He pointed out that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) currently maintains its ex-depot price at N587.7. However, if the NNPCL adjusts its prices, “other marketers will do the same.”

Furthermore, IPMAN called on the government to implement strategies to prevent the naira from depreciating further.

Ukadike said, “There will be a 10 per cent increase because the dollar was N750, now is over N900 that is almost a 20% increase if you apply this, you should be talking about N750/ litre.

“Currently, the dollar rate at the parallel market as of today is N910 which also means that the landing cost of PMS will increase and the domestic price of PMS will also increase.

“People should understand that government is no longer subsidizing and there is no local production in Nigeria. Had there been local production, it can be able to cushion the effect of too many naira pursuing the dollar. It would have helped us and saved the naira.

“If the government does not do something drastically, before the end of this year, Naira may be close to N1,100 per dollar and this will be a serious inflation for Nigeria.”

The pump price of the product has increased twice since the Federal Government removed fuel subsidy, hence market forces are now allowed to determine prices.

We’ll never deploy sit-at-home again for our agitation — IPOB

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPO has assured never to deploy sit-at-home as a tool of civil disobedience in its quest for self-determination. This is as Finland-based separatist group leader, Simon Ekpa has also raised the alarm that the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPO, Nnamdi Kanu is in critical condition.

In a statement on Saturday by the IPOB Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, the pro-Biafra group maintained that it would never again invoke its method of civil disobedience to demand self-determination.

To this end, the pro-separatist group encouraged Biafrans to help in the distribution of the flyers, and posters to communities, hinterlands, and cities in Biafraland signifying the requiem mass for the “senseless Monday sit-at-home.”

The statement reads: “This is to inform Biafrans about the flyers and posters being distributed all over Biafraland conveying our leader’s famous pronouncement canceling Monday sit-at-home and to inform the good people of Biafrans that the sit-at-home is not only dead but will never again be invoked or deployed as a tool of civil disobedience in our quest for self-determination.

Any person or persons talking about a non-existent sit-at-home in BiafraLand is an enemy of the people and shall be dealt with accordingly.”

He said: “The instructions to distribute these flyers by hand and paste posters to this effect was authorized by our prophet and indefatigable liberator Mazi Nnamdi Okwuchukwu Kanu.

“It is to be stated for the umpteenth time, for those who may feign ignorance of the laws governing the conduct expected of IPOB family worldwide that our supreme leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has ordered the permanent end to Monday sit-at-home in Biafraland and anybody seen enforcing this illegal and non-existent Monday sit-at-home will be apprehended and summarily dealt with on the spot.

“These criminal elements are not working for Biafra restoration nor the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu who is unlawfully detained in the DSS solitary confinement in Abuja Nigeria.

Those purporting to be running a Biafra Government in Exile group from somewhere in Finland also known as Autopilot are not IPOB members and their activities do not represent the views of the Supreme Leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, rank and file IPOB membership nor ESN operatives.

“Moreso, it is a shame to the memory of our brave martyrs that gave their lives for the emancipation of Biafra that individuals that never led ordinary street protests in Biafraland or anywhere in the world in support of Biafra restoration can claim to lead our people. This is an absolute disgrace.”

IPOB, therefore, dissociated itself from a group it described as the “ social media Biafra Government in Exile (BGIE).”.

The group denied ever having any government in exile and “will never have any government in exile.”

People that never led a protest anywhere in the world, were never detained, or held meetings with any international bodies can never claim to represent our people.

“Such a person is a charlatan, petty criminal, and a monumental fraud. Whoever is foolish enough to associate with such a fraudulent social media scam called Government in Exile (Autopilot) is doing so at his or her own risk and must not link Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and IPOB to it.

Hushpuppi: 31 Northern Lawyers To Defend Abba Kyari

No fewer than 31 lawyers from the northern part of the country have indicated interest in defending the embattled Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, who was recently suspended in connection with a $1.1m scam involving an internet fraudster, Ramon Abbas also known as Hushpuppi.

This was disclosed on Wednesday by Barrister Bappah Salisu, who spoke on behalf of the 31 legal practitioners from 19 Northern States.

According to the statement, the lawyers decided to offer the free legal service to Abba Kyari following a call by the Coalition of Northern Groups which demanded that the fundamental human right of the embattled police boss must be protected.

The Northern group had made the call following an indictment by a court in the United States of America after the discovery of Abba Kyari’s tie with Hushpuppi.

Speaking on the move by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to extradite Kyari to the United States, the group of lawyers said the FBI did not follow due procedure, stressing that they breached international protocol.

“We would raise questions involving the possibility of breaches to Kyari’s fundamental rights entrenched in Articles 6 and 7 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples Right which essentially state that every individual shall have the right to liberty and to the security of his person and every individual shall have the right to have his cause heard.
