#bitumen report: I knew there was calamity at Lekki — Desmond Elliot

Nigerian actor and politician Desmond Elliot has reacted to the Lagos EndSARS panel report, which was released on Monday.

Reacting to the report on the Wake Up Nigeria programme on TVC, he said that he read the report but already knew that the incident was chaotic.

Elliot also claimed that he knew that the truth regarding the incident would surface stating that it was a pattern for the government in power.

He said, “I read it and it was very heartbreaking. Heartwrenching. I knew there was a calamity, chaos. Except you are not Nigerian or you are not human. You would feel for everybody.

“I have always said something. When MKO died and the government of the day denied and denied, it took this government to come and say you know what, we have wronged you; this is the truth. And they actually gave Democracy Day.

“We have always said the truth comes out. There is no how you would try to hide it, the truth would come out.”

The member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, however, commended the state government for letting the report see the light of day.

Elliot said that the government’s action was commendable because it would have known that the report would indict it but still allowed it to be released.

“But I now looked at it from another angle. Is it possible that this government didn’t know what was going to come out? Of course, they did. But the government of today, I am talking of the state government, I want to believe knew what was going to come out.

“There is going to be an official statement so let me not jump the gun because I am also in office,” Elliot added.

The lawmaker came under fire after the Lekki toll gate incident for calling on the Speaker of the state House of Assembly to “address certain things” like “the Nigerian youth, the social media, the social influencers”.

The Federal Government has launched a portal for its 5,000 housing units which are under different phases of completion.

The Minister of Works and Housing Babatunde Fashiola, said Nigerians can now apply for houses built under the current Federal Government’s National Housing Programme (NHP) in 34 states of the country.

This was following the formal launch of the portal, which took place at the Conference Room of the Ministry in Mabushi, Abuja on Friday.

Fashola said, “We converge here just to introduce a portal on which the National Housing Programme pilot will be offered for sale to the public. What that means is that we will not be selling printed forms, the forms are online and this allows for more openness, limits human intervention and any disposition to any underhand practice”.

Nigeria has a housing deficit of over 21 million units and over N21trn will be required to finance the deficit.

But the debate by experts is that the country needs housing units that average Nigerians can afford.

The National Minimum Wage signed by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019 was N30,0000 per month.

The building project which was undertaken by the Ministry of Works is under the National Housing Programme programme and is inline with the United Nation Sustainable Development Goals in Nigeria (SGD), the government had claimed.

The seventeen SDGs have an urban component, including targets such as affordable housing.
