Best Goalkeepers in the World

While goal scorers tend to take all the limelight, the players in between the sticks are vital for any team's success. These goalkeepers are world class with incredible reflexes, elite positioning and a solid understanding of how to play the ball out from the back.

Morocco's Yassine Bounou had a breakout tournament at the 2022 World Cup and has been superb in his debut season with Sevilla. He has an outstanding shot-to-save ratio, a strong presence in one-on-one situations and elite positioning.

1. Thibaut Courtois

Thibaut Courtois is one of the best goalkeepers in the world. He has won a multitude of awards and trophies both at club and international level with Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Chelsea and Belgium.

The Belgian came through the same youth system at Racing Genk as Kevin de Bruyne before signing for Chelsea for PS8 million in 2009. He spent three seasons on loan with Atletico before returning to Stamford Bridge as Petr Cech’s replacement. He was then appointed number one by Zinedine Zidane and helped the club to a La Liga title.

2. David de Gea

David de Gea is one of the most important players in Manchester United's history and he has proven to be one of the world's best goalkeepers. He is agile and quick on his feet and has incredible reflexes. He can also handle crosses and sweep well, and his distribution from the back is very good.

Ederson is a Brazilian goalkeeper who plays for Manchester City and is known for his impressive saves. He has won the Premier League Golden Glove three times in his career and is a great goalkeeper overall.

3. Keylor Navas

Keylor Navas is one of the best goalkeepers in the world. He has excellent reflexes and agility, making it very difficult to score against him. He has also a good command of his box, which makes it hard for attackers to get into the area.

He made his name at Levante before moving to Real Madrid, where he replaced Iker Casillas. He has since been a key part of the club’s success, winning several titles.

He’s also a strong shot-stopper, and he has a good track record of keeping clean sheets. The IFFHS has ranked him fifth on their list of the best goalkeepers in the world.

4. Marc-Andre ter Stegen

Marc-Andre ter Stegen is one of the most talented goalkeepers in the world. He has an uncanny ability to read the game and makes incredible saves that most goalkeepers would struggle with.

The Borussia Monchengladbach keeper is an all-around great goalkeeper. His parents enrolled him in the club’s academy at the age of four after noticing his interest in football.

After Chelsea spent PS70 million on Alisson, the club was dragged through social media for making such a large investment in a goalkeeper. But the Brazilian has proved his worth, despite playing second-choice to Hugo Lloris for the national team.

5. Ederson

Ederson is a big-game player who has proven himself at the highest level for both club and country. He has outstanding reflexes, is calm and composed with the ball, and commands his area well.

He was instrumental in Manchester City winning the 2021/20 Premier League title. He also battles it out with Liverpool's Alisson Becker for the Brazil number one shirt and is a key part of Pep Guardiola's style of play.

When he was brought in from Lille, many fans laughed at the fee and his sweeper-keeper role. But Mendy has been a huge factor in Chelsea's success and also excelled for Senegal at the 2021 AFCON.

6. Jan Oblak

When it comes to keeping clean sheets, Slovenian star Jan Oblak is one of the best. The Olimpija Ljubljana and Real Madrid star is an expert shot-stopper with quick reflexes.

Despite the dramas at Barcelona over the years, Marc-Andre ter Stegen has kept his head above water. The German keeper’s commanding sweeper-keeper style has been integral to complimenting Barca’s elite passing game.

When Liverpool spent nearly PS70 million on Alisson, social media was awash with jibes – but those people have been eating their words for months. He’s a superb goalkeeper with super long limbs and elite positioning.

7. Manuel Neuer

When it comes to goalkeepers who can run the game from their box, nobody is quite like Germany's Manuel Neuer. At the most recent World Cup he helped his side reach the final and at Bayern Munich he was a key part of their Champions League success last season.

Joachim Loew trusts him to read the play from the edge of his penalty area and act as an extra defender when the rest of the team are looking to clear their lines. Neuer is also good at completing long passes and shortening the distance between himself and his defenders in possession.
