The first phones included ringtone capabilities. However, these services only came with limited selections. It took some time before ringtones caught on in the West. However, in 1998, Finnish musician Vesku-Matti Paananen managed to develop a way to send MIDI files directly to the phone. Soon after, other smartphone companies followed suit. By 2004, ringtones had become a $4 billion industry. By that time, the majority of ringtones were monophonic. By the end of 2014, ringtones were available in polyphonic phones.
