Nigeria Immigration Service Cracks Down on Visa Overstayers After Amnesty Ends
Following the expiry of the Federal Government’s visa-amnesty window on September 30, 2025, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has launched a nationwide crackdown on foreigners overstaying visas or breaching immigration laws.
The amnesty, which ran from July 5, 2025, allowed foreigners with expired documents to regularise their status without penalties. Now, starting October 1, NIS officers will target holders of expired Visas on Arrival, short-visit/business visas, and expired CERPAC permits.
Offenders face removal, fines of $15 per day for short overstays, and escalating entry bans—ranging from five to ten years or permanent bans for overstays over a year.
The crackdown aims to enforce lawful migration, enhance national security, and improve transparency in Nigeria’s immigration system.
