In simple words, the kidney is a major organ that provides support to our body .

Prevalence:

About 1 in every 100 individuals experience Hydronephrosis at some point in their life .

In the United states up to 1 in every 100 births have ureteropelvic junction obstruction, which is one of the common causes of Hydronephrosis in this age group.

Physiologically hydronephrosis develops in 80% pregnant women mostly during the second trimester that subsides a few weeks after parturition .

Cause of Hydronephrosis:

Cause of hydronephrosis may be intrinsic or extrinsic Both.

Intrinsic factors include renal stones, malignancy, ureteropelvic junction stenosis, ureteral strictures from prior inflammation, renal cysts, posterior urethral valves, benign prostatic hyperplasia, and neurogenic bladder, etc.

Extrinsic factors include pregnancy, peripelvic cysts, retrocaval ureter, malignancy, trauma, retroperitoneal fibrosis, and prostate abscess, etc.

Nephrolithiasis or renal calculi is the most common cause of Hydronephrosis or hydroureteronephrosis in adult age.

The obstruction in urine flow causes increased hydrostatic pressure in the kidney that eventually affects the glomerular filtration rate of the kidney, if the condition is not treated on time this may damage the kidney tissues and develop chronic kidney disease

Kidney swelling occurs only due to obstruction in urine flow if the obstruction is removed on time then the kidney may function properly.

In Ayurveda this problem is due to problems in mutrvaha srotas and udakvah srotas.

During the consultation ayurveda Doctor ruled out the main cause of the disease like whether it is from renal calculus or from kidney infection or from urine stricture.

According to that medication in ayurveda are planned.

Analysis of prakruti and vikruti is also important to treat the disease effectively.

There are many herbs and herbal formulations like varuna, pashanbheda, gokshura that help in reducing the size of calculus , and many kshar preparation ( alkaline formulation ) are also used to reduce the size of calculus.
